About Cliff
My full name is Clifford J. Boan, but only my mother calls me Clifford. My wife and friends call me Cliff. My clients call me when they're in distress.I'm a civil litigation and personal injury attorney with the law firm of Goitein | Rosa in Bethesda, Maryland. I focus exclusively on civil matters, advocating for individuals, businesses, and families facing complex and often painful legal challenges. I take hard cases, usually for underdogs with a compelling story and a wrong that needs to be righted. Whether it’s a serious injury, a breach of trust or contract, a divorce, or some other dispute that doesn’t necessarily fit a defined practice area, clients trust me to understand their concerns and goals, evaluate potential outcomes, devise a strategy, and execute. Clients initially value the priority I place on the interpersonal aspect of the attorney-client relationship, my commitment to understanding complex facts, and my open, direct communication style. Throughout their cases, clients come to trust and rely on me for responsiveness, tenacity, and compassion: values instilled in me through adversity and service. The path to my current litigation and trial practice wasn't conventional. I grew up in a working-class Scottish immigrant family in Kearny, New Jersey. Early life had its share of instability and hardship, but it also offered glimpses of tremendous potential and hope. Nearing adulthood, it became clear to me that paths existed, though not yet fully visible, to overcome circumstances and pursue meaningful goals. Driven by that perspective, youthful grit, and a great deal of loving support, at seventeen I enlisted in the Marine Corps.Since stepping on the yellow footprints at Parris Island many years ago, my life has been a rich tapestry of experiences that inform my daily work as an attorney. Like many, I’ve had the privilege of living and working far and wide, but Maryland has been my chosen home for most of my adult life. My legal experience includes positions at respected law firms and judicial clerkships. My journey also includes waiting tables, bartending, residential painting, construction, entrepreneurship, business operations management, business ownership, and a stint as a solo practitioner. During that same time, I’ve also experienced the stress of unexpected crises: emergency surgeries, a cancer diagnosis, financial uncertainty, and the impact to mental and emotional health, family, and professional endeavors that accompanies long-term, invasive medical treatment. That background drives how I strive to practice law today: no ego; understand the problem, strategize a solution, focus on the process, do the work, and don’t give up. Don't ever give up. Coupled with that approach is the understanding that success rarely happens alone. Achieving difficult goals requires guidance. I’ve been fortunate to receive that guidance in abundance, from drill instructors and doctors to other legal professionals. Sharing that guidance with clients in pursuit of their own goals is the overarching purpose of my work as a civil litigation lawyer.Outside of my professional life, I also find great meaning serving as a Veteran Mentor with the Maryland Central Regional Veterans Treatment Court. Aside from obtaining justice for a client, there is no greater reward for service than supporting Veterans who are working to overcome the life limitations imposed on them by mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and trauma. I also enjoy gardening, bird, bee, and butterfly watching, starting (and often finishing) home improvement projects around my 1923 craftsman bungalow, hiking, astronomy, photography, live music, wellness practices, alpine skiing, fishing, and golfing. I live in Baltimore County and am fortified in all things by an amazing wife, son, daughter-in-law, and a platoon of nieces and nephews.
